Reflections on College Decisions

Wednesday March 18, 2015: Champaign, IL.  With spring comes big decisions for high school seniors.  They are looking for their home for the next 4 years, the place where they should be spending the "best years of their lives".  I know many of our readers are Brooke's age, and I hope that my experience can help relieve some of the stress.
College Checklist
1. Choose a school.  This might seem obvious, but it can be the hardest decision you've ever had to make!  You want it to be the place where you feel comfortable, and doesn't automatically make you start thinking about how far or how easy it would be to get home from.  The most surprising moment will be the first time you go home, and start calling college your "home".
2. Find a dorm.  This was the hardest part for me because I knew I wouldn't survive in the traditional bathroom-sharing hall style.  I luckily go to a school where there is private housing, which gave me one of the best years of college thus far.  You want to make sure you have seen the rooms, the bathroom, and the dining hall before making your decision.
3. Find a roommate.  Once I knew where I wanted to live, I looked for a roommate on my school's Facebook page that wanted to be in the same dorm.  It's important that you have similarities in living styles, but having different personalities is what will make living together an enjoyable learning experience.  Living in the dorms is like having a sleepover with all of your best friends every night, it's a year you will look back on with great memories forever.
Four years absolutely flies by.  No matter where you go or who you live with you will want to stay there forever.
